Guitars Pat Metheny uses

PM100BK

While no one will question Pat Metheny's knowledge and command of traditional jazz,no one would call him a "traditional jazz guitarist." It follows that the guitar he designed with Ibanez has the craftsmanship and beauty of the classic, full bodied jazz boxes...but it is not an traditional jazz box. Pat Metheny's first signature model, the Ibanez PM100, differs from its jazz box predecessors by having a double cutaway and a 22 fret neck that joins the neck at the 17th fret for for easier access to the upper frets.

PM100NT

Every aspect of the PM100 was designed to achieve the sound and playability that Pat demanded: neck size, fret type, thickness of the top, back and sides, bridge material, pickup type (Super 58)and placement. This distinctive original design instrument is meticulously craftedwith maple top, back and sides to provide maximum tonal balance, projection and expressiveness. The Gotoh 510 Deluxe tuners, with their 18:1 ratio, offer precision tuning on the PM100. Gotoh 510 tuners also offer uniform tuning at any tension, eventhe high tension strings favored by jazz players.

PM20TK

For 1999 is the PM20 Model, available in NT (Natural) and TK (Transparent Black). The PM20 is a much more traditional jazz instrument than the PM100 and is based on the Ibanez guitar that Pat has played for over fifteen years(which was derived from the classic Ibanez FG100 large body jazz guitar).

PM20NT

Like the PM100 the top, sides and back are maple with a set-in 22 medium fret mahogany neck. The pickup is one of our longest running series, the Super 58, which has been used by countless jazz players since the early 1980's.The PM20 model has a deep cutaway for easy access to the upper frets and a Full-Tune II adjustable bridge.

Manzer Classical

This nylon string guitar has a Cedar top with Indian Rosewood back and sides. 12 Fret neck joint and thinner than conventional neck shape. (Although traditional neck shape is available) The ergonomic "Wedge" design (a feature which I designed original for the "Pikasso" guitar in 1986, is described in the Custom Features section of this site) is standard on this model making it very comfortable to play. Can be heard played and recorded beautifully on Beyond the Missouri Sky by Pat Metheny and Charlie Haden.

Classical Archtop

This is a guitar for those who want the nylon string sound with more projection (than a standard classical guitar). The model shown here is a fretless classical and can be heard on Imaginary Day by the Pat Metheny Group. Played by Pat Metheny on the song "Imaginary Day"
